Lucky No. 7 hits Etsy!

October 20th, 2012

I’m so thrilled to be able to share the newest venture from my talented Sister-in-Law Katie (her personal blog is here:BeKatelyn).

Katie has just opened a fantastic new Etsy shop called LuckyNo7 and it’s stocked with incredibly beautiful handmade quilts of all sizes. Not only are they beautiful and meticulously made, but Katie has come up with an ingenious way to give back. For every 6 quilts that she sells, Katie will make and donate one to charity! Isn’t that incredible?! Hence the clever name of her shop… Lucky No. 7!

I’d like to invite each of you to take a moment to check out her shop on Etsy and support her new venture. These quilts are beautiful and would make a cherished gift for someone you love. Congrats Katie XO Daria

Royal Rugrats – Baking up some felt fun! {Giveaway & Promo}

January 10th, 2011

il_570xN.194590910 Welcome my friends to the wonderful and imaginative world of felt play food! Royal Rugrats had my daughter Lola and I baking up some serious fun with their beautiful felt kitchen utensils set. Lola is only 1 year old so she’s new to the baking scene, however that didn’t stop my little darling from diving in and exploring what each spatula and measuring spoon was like. She LOVED these and so do I!!

Royal Rugrats is a fantastically well stocked shop on Etsy featuring handmade felt play sets including things like vegetables, peanut butter sandwiches, strawberries, bacon and eggs, cookies, spaghetti and even sushi!! Lola received the precious kitchen utensils and some little sugar cookies designed for little fingers and big imaginations in mind. I fell immediately in love with the quality and beauty of each piece in her set, they are sewn with great care and I expect they will last Lola for many years of fun. I also loved the sizing of each piece in Lola’s set, they were perfect for her and I know any little child would be thrilled to have a play set of their own. It’s just the type of thing I would have squealed about when I was a kid. lolafeltutensils

Brooke is the owner and designer behind the Royal Rugrats products, she has a fashion design degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC and a merchandising degree from Oneonta State University. Brooke began her business creating these soft play foods and sets because she didn’t like the hard plastic kinds available in stores. Then she discovered the beauty of working with felt to create her designs and became hooked, she now runs Royal Rugrats Yummies full time and the response to her store has been incredible.

We’d like to invite you to bake up some Felt Fun of your very own. This type of play is so wonderful for children, it broadens their minds and helps their imaginations to dance with creativity. Lola and I will be play baking again today, why don’t you stop by Royal Rugrats and join us. – XO Daria

Random acts of gardening with VisuaLingual Seed Bombs

April 29th, 2010

I caught sight of VisuaLingual Seed Bombs on Cool Mom Picks and had to feature this fun gift idea on Boutique Cafe’s Daily Dish. With springtime around the corner (a very big corner in Utah), some random acts of gardening are just what Mother Nature ordered!

VisuaLingual

VisuaLingual sent me a bag of their Midwest Seed Bombs to review on the Daily Dish.

VisuaLingual SeedBombs

This “bird-, bee- and butterfly-friendly wildflower mixture” includes, get this, Upland White Aster, Prairie Aster, Cornflower, Siberian Wallflower, Shasta Daisy, Lance-Leaf Coreopsis, Plains Coreopsis, Sulphur Cosmos, Wild Cosmos, Sweet William, Purple Coneflower, California Poppy, Perennial Gaillardia, Indian Blanket, Baby’s Breath, Wild Annual Sunflower, Dwarf Sunflower, Dame’s Rocket, Candytuft, Blue Flax, Scarlet Flax, Perennial Lupine, Russell Lupine, Baby Blue Eyes, Evening Primrose, Red Poppy, Mexican Hat, Prairie Coneflower, Black-Eyed Susan, Gloriosa Daisy, and Sweet Coneflower. WHEW! That’s a lot of seeds packed into five gumball-size “bombs” of dirt!

VisuaLingual SeedBombs

You can purchase your seed bombs in the fall and winter as long as you keep them cool and dry until all danger of frost has passed in the spring. (I live in Utah and it snowed just this morning, so that could be July at the rate we’re going!) Once there’s no danger of frost, “plant them as usual.” Um, that last part is what has me scratching my head.

The five seed bombs come packaged in a muslin bag (made in the USA) and screenprinted by hand. Included inside is the full list of seeds. What’s not included is some simple directions for planting or placing the seed bombs. I’m sure most green thumbs would find it a no-brainer, but for those of us garden-challenged, a few simple steps would be helpful. I have no idea how deep to plant the seed bombs or whether they need to be in full or part shade. Do I place the bombs a few inches apart or a few feet? Help a novice gardener out!

I do love the idea of a summertime surprise, which is what you’ll get with these little goodies. And VisuaLingual Seed Bombs would make an awesome gift for the gardener in your family. Or even a fun gift for the kids—my son would love anything involving dirt and the word “bomb” as would just about any kid of any age, including my husband. With VisualLingual’s Midwest Seed Bombs (and a few easy directions) even I could get into practicing random acts of gardening!

VisuaLingualVisuaLingual also has some beautiful tea towels, coasters, trivets and prints. You could put together a really fabulous gift set for Mother’s Day from this Etsy shop alone!—Emily

* Promotion! VisuaLingual is offering Daily Dish readers 25% off their entire purchase! Simply enter code Boutique Cafe when checking out. Offer expires May 12, 2010, so don’t wait too long to order your Seed Bombs!

An Interview With Designer Angie Eisman

November 10th, 2009

headshot_web
How did you become ThatFunkyBoutique?

In 2003, I started creating children’s clothing and needed a name. During an online chat with friends, several were suggested and I immediately was drawn to That Funky Boutique. Seemed catchy and I do like to have a playfulness and uniqueness in my creations. I’m no longer doing children’s items but it still seems to fit ok for my etsy shop.

Can you share your background in design?

From a young age I knew I wanted to be an artist. I can’t say enough about the professors I was able to learn from while getting a BFA with emphasis in Illustration and design. After school, I worked for an advertising company for several years where was able to design and illustrate national catalogs and then went off on my own as a freelance artist and designer. I’ve been freelancing ever since and consider it my main focus. Though my textile designs do take over during some seasons! Recent illustration clients include Chatti Patti, Knuckleheads Clothing, Portabello Pixie and others. My That Funky Boutique line fits in nicely between projects as I can never sit still.

Where do you find your inspiration for your creations? What part of
the process is your favorite?

Inspiration for my textile creations comes from all over the place. From my children, from nature, from the materials on hand. Those are the biggest jumping off points.
The first part in the process is my favorite. From early sketches to completing the sample.

il_430xN.101324164How did you come up with your new HOT scarf design for fall? What are
the features of it that will make women want them this season?

My scarves came about on a whim. I hadn’t sewn in quite a long time due to a cross country move that demanded my time and energy. But I dusted off my machine to do some personal sewing for fun. My first scarf was originally going to be a throw blanket out of some wool and cashmere scraps. I did one long length to start the blanket. There happened to be a mirror close by where I was working and I caught a glimpse of myself with the piece. I threw it around my neck and viola. A unique scarf. I had a feeling it would sell and sell it did! Along with more than 100 more in the first month of selling. I never set out to sew and sell again but here I am enjoying it!

What has been the response since having your scarves featured last
week on The Today Show?

I was humbly honored to have my scarf requested for The Today Show segment. I’m hopeful that the segment brought in lots of viewers for all Etsy artisans! My sales are the same—selling about as fast as I can create them!

What are your future goals and projects?

I’m currently in the middle of illustrating sewing patterns for Sandi of Portabello Pixie. They are close to being finalized so keep an eye out at your local quilt stores. Sandi will have many new childrens’ and womens’ designs available in the next few months. As for my That Funky Boutique creations, the scarves have been so well received but I’m just a one woman show. My future goals are to find ways to increase production so I can take on more wholesale and retail sales next year.

Everything’s coming up posies!

October 19th, 2008

little pink posiesAnother Daily Dish confession: I am secretly glad my girls have never gotten into the American Girl thing. Though the dolls are amazingly real, in my opinion the price of the dolls and accessories is pretty unreal. But the idea of personalizing a doll to look just like my daughter is still a fun one, and so I’m glad there are other options, one of the sweetest being little pink posies’ posy girl pendants.

little pink posiesThe posy girl pendant is little pink posies signature product and you can easily see why. These sweet little hand-painted wood doll pendants are customized for the little girls who will wear them. The artist was initially inspired by vintage peg and clothespin dolls and her son’s love of vintage wooden Fisher-Price Little People. For her, it was important to design something unique and that celebrated the individual personalities of the wearer. “A few brainstorms and a small army of painted dolls later, the posy girl pendant was born.”

My oldest daughter was the lucky “reviewer” of a posy pendant. Customized with her hair color, the first letter of her first name and her favorite colors, the pendant was an immediate hit! She wore it from the moment it arrived until she went to bed and then proudly wore it to school the next day to show her friends. It looked expertly hand painted and I could tell great care had been taken in crafting the doll. I was amazed at the tiny detailing—my eyes would have gone crossed had I tried to do it!

little pink posiesAlong with the posy girl pendants (I absolutely LOVE the Posy Girl Playset), little pink posies also has beautiful hand-stitched jewelry and hair accessories. We are definitely heading in to the holiday season and a posy girl pendant would make a great gift for your little girl this season. Plus, this personalized doll option won’t require you to increase the spending limit on your credit card!—Emily

* Promotion! little pink posies is offering Daily Dish readers free shipping on their order. Simply enter code “Boutique Café” in the “notes to seller” section at checkout and a revised PayPal invoice will be sent after checkout is complete.

“I love creating baby gifts that my customers can be proud to give to their friends and family. I have been sewing since I was a child, and fell in love with quilting in my 20’s. After having children, I still needed that creative outlet, but felt overwhelmed at tackling an entire quilt. That’s when my quilted bib was born—still a quilt, but it can be completed in one sitting. I am inspired by bright, modern, and fun prints, and I hope babies enjoy wearing my bibs as much as I enjoy making them.” – Becky
