Gearing up for International Quilt Market This week

I am giddy that this week, in just a few days I’ll have the experience once again of attending Quilt Market in Salt Lake City. Quilt Market is a twice a year phenomenon where fabric designers, pattern makers, sewing enthusiasts and industry gather to showcase what they have been working on. It’s a treat and there is always great energy in the air. Sometimes you feel like you’re bursting with ideas just by being in the room.

We have been covering Quilt Market as Press for our viewers for several years now, and I have a feeling that this year is going to be the best ever! To share in all the creative fun I have a great team coming along with me – Emily our Contributing Editor and owner of Is This Really My Life, and Megan (our past Queen of Chat on Boutique Cafe) and owner of Brassy Apple. Aren’t I a lucky girl to have such a talented and amazing team?!! Just look for the two tall, amazingly stunning gals with cute hair and great shoes and you’ll spot Emily and Megan!! We are gearing up for all the fun and mayhem that Quilt Market provides. If you are attending and see us in the aisles please stop and say hello, we would love to meet you. I also have a few goodies to give away…shhhhhh its kind of a surprise.

Boutique Cafe will be featuring a huge selection of Market interviews, pictures and oodles of giveaways with many of your favourite designers, so be sure to check back here for post-Market coverage. We will even be partying with many bloggers at the Quilt Market Meet-up on Saturday evening. Thursday evening I’m hoping to make it to Quilt Market Sweet Treats and Drinks, a mixer so I’m crossing my fingers that my plane arrives on time for us to attend. It’s going to be a whirlwind of a weekend (feet don’t fail me now), but I can’t wait to get back and share all that we have discovered with you.

Networking when you can’t “face to face”

I know you’ve been there, the next great networking conference is announcing all of their fantastic speakers, events and mixer opportunities in your niche market. You read the tweets, you see the blog posts, you can’t escape the Facebook Status updates from all the cool kids saying “I’m going!” and you literally wilt in your chair. You KNOW that if only you could attend it would catapult your business into stardom, you’d be rollin’ with the homies baby!

We’ve all been there when the reality sets in that this time (maybe every time) you have to pass on the chance to connect in a real live “face to face” situation with heavy hitters in your industry. It’s crushing, it’s depressing, you wonder if you can ever develop a connection and lasting business relationship using alternative means of networking. Can you get results, win friends and influence people without the actual face to face connect a conference setting provides?

This is the topic we’re tweeting about and discussing in the Boutique Cafe Facebook group this week. Have you had a similar experience please come share it. If you have found other means and methods of alternative networking it’s time to spill the beans and share your secret to networking success. That way the next conference that rolls around that we can’t attend won’t send us into a tailspin of chocolate eating and deep sobs. – Daria

Moms Who Make It: Nominate a mom

Though the mini-class and full-day conference tickets for Moms Who Make It are sold out (by the way, the conference isn’t just for moms) there is still time to buy your afternoon/evening session tickets. This ticket will get you into main part of the conference, which includes our Shop & Socialize (browsing the boutiques and sponsors); inspiring keynote speakers; panel of fab women; breakout sessions on everything from motherhood to social media; a gourmet—and I truly mean gourmet—dinner; and Mocktail Party social. Did I mention we also have some fun swag for our attendees? I should know since the boxes arrive daily at my home!

One fun part of the Moms Who Make It conference is our Moms Who Are Making It spotlight. During this time we will be honoring 10 moms who have had difficult life circumstances but have used them as a catalyst to change their lives for the better. These are moms who have inspired you to look at your own life and think, “I can make it too!”

We will collect all the nominations and randomly select ten to be honored at the conference. Each time a mom is nominated she receives an entry into the drawing, so the more nominations the better her chance of being spotlighted at our event. These moms will receive a full-day ticket to the conference and some fun swag! If you know a mom who is “making it,” please email or comment a quick summary (200 words or less) on why you think she should be honored during the Moms Who Make It conference. And I know I’m not the only one who got a kick out of watching Ross the Intern on Jay Leno; he had a heck of a lot more than fifteen minutes of fame. Yes, Mother’s Day is this weekend and yes, if you’re shopping online you should have done your shopping by now. But I know a few of you out there are still on the hunt for the perfect Mother’s Day gift and may have a forgiving mom like mine who’s okay with a gift that’s a few days late (as long as she gets a card, chocolate and an IOU on Mother’s Day).
