Summer Lovin’ at Boutique Cafe

August 4th, 2013

Why Hello friends, I’m sure you’ve been wondering where I’ve toddled off to. It’s summer and I’ve been spending my days with my cute little kids enjoying the sunshine. We’ve been surfing in Tofino, swimming in our pool, I even hosted a wedding for a couple I’d never met before at my house overlooking the ocean. It’s been busy and wonderful all rolled into one. The truth is, that I miss you all though.

I’ve been trying to make some new plans for Boutique Cafe. When I started this website years and years ago my life was infinitely different, and so was the boutique community. I’m transitioning in my personal life, and am looking to transition Boutique Cafe along with me. I warmly welcome your advice and suggestions in this, after all we’ve been through alot together you and I over the years.

While I’m figuring that out I want to invite you to follow along at my Instagram feed, it’s a fun place where I regularly share the likes and loves in my everyday life. Daria – Instagram

I look forward to making some BIG CHANGES here very soon, let’s continue to be friends!

Daria Plays “Mad Libs” on Is This Really My Life today:

September 20th, 2010

I must tell you I’m quite honoured to be asked to play Mad Libs with all the “cool kids” on Emily’s blog “Is This Really My Life” today! I’ve never played Mad Libs before in my life, and it’s been excruciating waiting to see how my answered filled in those blanks. LOL! I must admit that it’s taking ALL of my self control not to request a “DO OVER” and send new words now. I’ll try to control myself though. Emily sent over on the request for a certain number of NOUNS, ADJECTIVES etc. and filled them all in. Screen shot 2010-09-20 at 9.14.21 AM

I definitely laughed at the end when it asked for someone else in the room. All I could think of was Mindy Gledhill because her music has been filling my studio non-stop. That TOTALLY counts right?!!

Thanks for the fun Emily and for featuring a bit about my life too – I sure do love you! XOXO Daria

Please swing over to “Is This Really My Life” and check out my feature :)

Spring Market with Amy Butler – Show #124

September 18th, 2010

It’s always a joy for me to share news or an interview with designer and friend Amy Butler. Spring Market 2010 brought many exciting things for Amy to share with us, especially Soul Blossoms her gorgeous new colour rich fabric line. (Amy’s Honey Bun Poufs, Yarn, Wallpaper and more are also featured in this video interview).

Stepping up to the mic once again for us is our incredible Star Correspondent, the beautiful Bari J. Ackerman. Bari took Quilt Market by storm, and we had the privilege of seeing much of it through her eyes. Thank you so much Bari for stepping in and interviewing so many designers for Boutique Cafe!!

Happy Holidays: Daily Dish faves from 2009

December 23rd, 2009

I’m slowly learning there really is no work/life balance thing for me. Things go a lot more smoothly around here if the balance shifts in favor of family and so I’ll be taking some time off from posting Daily Dish reviews during the holidays. I might even find time to send out Christmas cards and make a few neighbor plates. (Who am I kidding?)

I’ll be back in full review force on January 5th. Until then enjoy some hot cocoa or hot apple cider while catching my favorite reviews from 2009. Happy holidays!

Em’s Favorite Reviews, 2009 Edition

Babycape—the superhero of winter coats

Loved testing the Babycape last winter and plan to use it again this winter season. Beautiful, soft, toasty and perfect for infants and toddlers. And guess what? One cape will last your child several seasons!

Pop Fly hits a home run with my kids

My kids still love Justin Roberts’ Pop Fly CD. It’s one of the most fun, danceable, groovable children’s CDs out there.

Time to change tactics!

My toddler has yet to be potty trained (she’s the most stubborn of the bunch) and so we’re still utilizing the diaper/wipes case. My favorite to date is JJ Cole’s Tactic Changing Purse. It goes from car to gym to church and is the perfect size for wipes, diapers, ointment and even a small change of clothes. (Fortunately we don’t need that anymore!)

I just can’t get enough!

We have featured See Kai Run multiple times on the Daily Dish and I never get tired of these perfect little children’s shoes. The pink Mary Jane Jennaes pictured in this post were worn by my daughter nearly every day of the week until she could no longer squish fit into them. We wore those shoes out and yet they still looked great enough to hand down to my friend’s little girl. Quite possibly my favorite pair of shoes Livi owns…or owned. {sniff}

Anne Taintor’s vintage humor makes me laugh out loud every time I see it. It’s so my style. And yes, I’ve often wished I’d actually told my girlfriend to “stop me before I volunteer again.”

The HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam Edition: The hottest clutch to hit the runway!

I have used my HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam Edition notebook (or Vivienne Tam for short) more times than I can count—and had more women ooh and aah over it every time I pull it out of my handbag. I still need to wipe the drool off the keyboard when I’m done tweeting, Facebooking, emailing and updating my blog via this handy handbag-sized notebook.

Add some ambiance to your favorite aroma

I use my Contempo Candle Warmer Lamp every day. I love this alternative to sooty candles and the danger an open flame around a curious preschool-age boy poses. I just replaced my fruity pomegranate candle with a more appropriate spice one for the holidays. The smell is wonderful and the light gives off just the right glow in the evening.

Hapari makes swimsuit shopping a happy experience

Fabulous tankinis and bikinis in super fun prints combined with high-quality fabric and construction make these suits some of my faves. I’m also a big fan of their Shore, a sort of half-shirt-meets-cap-sleeve style layering tee that I’ve found works wonderfully well under dresses.

Photofiddle Dad this Father’s Day—he’ll love it!

I have my Photofiddled canvas artwork displayed on our dresser and not a day goes by that I don’t absolute love looking at it. Nothing like creating a work of art from a digital file!

Flip goes the world!

By now you’ve heard of Flip video and their handy, dandy line of mini handheld video cameras. I have two, the Mino and the UltraHD and the UltraHD is by far my favorite. Though not as compact as the Mino it takes superb video. We use our Flip all the time; so much so we forget we own a “real” handheld video camera. That thing has an inch of dust on it by now.

Kickin’ it on a mini kick scooter

George rocked and rolled his Kickboard USA mini kick scooter all summer long. Though we discovered leaving it in direct sunlight for extended periods of time fades the beautiful orange color, this is still my son’s favorite scooter and I love that it’s more stable than the Razor ones my girls ride. If you’re in the market for a preschool-friendly scooter, this is it!

CurlyQ Cuties for your little cutie!

Looking for a unique children’s gift? Heck, even an adult would love the custom monsters you can make using CurlyQ Cuties’ online Monster-Maker. George’s CurlyQ Cutie is still one of his favorite “reviews”—he loves that thing!

My new favorite tote

My Ann Judge Everyday tote served me well during our last vacation and it’s still my go-to bag when I need to pack more than the necessities like lip gloss, wallet and cell phone. Well made, beautiful and perfect for travel overseas and around town.

Jewelry storage disguised as art

Beautiful fabric + hand-finished wood dowels + convenient hooks = the perfect way to manage/display/organize/make sense of your earring collection. Need I say more?

Can functional be fun? Heck, yes!

Though one of my most recent reviews it still makes my fave list for 2009. The wit and real-life wisdom of Knock Knock’s products make for some serious chuckles if not outright laughter. Perfect for gift giving whether for yourself or that annoying coworker.

Our review dates are already filling up for the first quarter of 2010. If you would like your product or site featured on the Daily Dish, shoot us an email at dailydish{at}boutiquecafe.com.

See you in 2010!

POURfect comes pretty close to perfect

September 8th, 2009

41lAX0UGyPL._SS500_The POURfect line of measuring cups and measuring spoons claim to be “the world’s most complete and accurate set of measuring spoons and cups.” Considering the measuring cups have 9 pieces and the measuring spoons have 12, that’s probably true. I have yet to see a more complete set of measuring cups and spoons, and I have a few sets in my kitchen drawer.

83046I received the POURfect spoons and cups in the Kitchen-Aid’s Imperial Red. (They have spoons and cups to match 6 of Kitchen-Aid’s colors.) The first thing I thought when I opened the box was “those are some serious measuring spoons and measuring cups!” Apparently they both include some hard-to-find sizes. The cups come in 1/8, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3 3/4, 1C, 1½C, 2C while the spoons come in 1/64, 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 3/4, 1t, 1½T, 1T, 2T. Whew! Both sets have bold text and include English, metric and even braille; calibrated measurements that are “guaranteed accurate;” polished bowl so ingredients release easily. (I’m still not sure peanut butter releases easily in anything but Pampered Chef’s .)

Anyway, I tried and tested both the measuring cups and spoons and here are my thoughts:

  • Who the heck needs a 1/64th teaspoon? or a 1/32nd for that matter? And the 2 c. measuring cup seems a bit redundant. Is it really that much more effort to use the 1 c. twice? Save some plastic, people!

  • Though the thought of the “POURfect” pouring lip on the cups is a nice one, I think it really works best on their POURfect bowls. I don’t ever pour from the front of a measuring cup; 99% of the time I pour from the side.

  • I loved the stabilizing rubber rings on the larger measuring cups. That feature was nice!

  • LOVE the Imperial Red—yummy, yummy kitchen color.

  • I also really like the raised text. I find when measuring cups have the measurements painted on they wear off after time and then it’s anybody’s guess as to how much brown sugar your packing into your cookies. Of course those same raised measurements are the same color as the cups so it’s sometimes hard to read.

At $12 for the POURfect measuring spoons and $18 for the POURfect measuring cups, I think you’re better off with a standard yet high-quality set from Target like the Kitchen-Aid line. I am intrigued by their POURfect bowls, which you can learn more about via videos on their site. A POURfect mixing bowl would come in handy when we use our Baker’s Edge brownie pan. It’s not easy getting that batter in there!—Emily

Breathe Easy . . . and Then Call Your Representatives

January 31st, 2009

Article by: Heather Flottman
liliputians NYC

As you have probably already read (perhaps here on Boutique Café ) the CPSC has granted a 1 year stay of testing and certification (an excerpt from the press release is in italics below).

The stay of enforcement provides some temporary, limited relief to the crafters, children’s garment manufacturers and toy makers who had been subject to the testing and certification required under the CPSIA. These businesses will not need to issue certificates based on testing of their products until additional decisions are issued by the Commission. However, all businesses, including, but not limited to, handmade toy and apparel makers, crafters and home-based small businesses, must still be sure that their products conform to all safety standards and similar requirements, including the lead and phthalates provisions of the CPSIA.
Handmade garment makers are cautioned to know whether the zippers, buttons and other fasteners they are using contain lead. Likewise, handmade toy manufacturers need to know whether their products, if using plastic or soft flexible vinyl, contain phthalates.

However, this issue is NOT over. Stop. Take a breath. Pat yourself on the back. Know that you’ll still be able to continue selling custom outfits, hair bows, or whatever product you create come February 10th. And then regroup.

It is crucial that momentum is not lost. Hope is very near with Senator Jim DeMint of SC (one of the 3 in the Senate who voted “nay” against this along with Senator Jon Kyl and Senator Thomas Coburn) introducing legislation to reform CPSIA. Call, email or write Senator DeMint and tell him “thank you.” Call your senators and tell them you support this. Let common sense prevail.

Keep the heat on Congressman Waxman and other members of the Committee on Energy and Commerce. Email them. Call (202-225-2927) and let them know that CPSIA needs to be amended. Let them know you support the 6 points presented by Senator Demint. Keep up the fight and save handmade.

A Ray of Sunshine – CPSIA Update

January 12th, 2009

Article by: Heather Flottman
liliputians NYC

On December 17th, I wrote my first article for Boutique Café. It summarized the CPSIA and its effects on the handmade toy and clothing industry as well as the unintended consequences for a gamut of other businesses that sell or manufacture products for children 12 and under. Fortunately there have been some positive developments to report since then.

For one, the media seems to be finally paying attention. News programs are reporting the ramifications of CPSIA, blog postings have a steady stream of calls-to-action, and newspapers big and small are focusing on the issue. This needs to continue to make the public aware of the impact the legislation will have to small business if not amended.

The thrift and resale shops were given a reprieve yesterday with the CPSC’s press release which clarified that “sellers of used children’s products, such as thrift stores and consignment stores are not required to certify that those products meet the new lead limits, phthalates standard or new toy standards.” It later goes on to state, “However, resellers cannot sell children’s products that exceed the lead limit and should avoid products that are likely to have lead content.” And, “Those resellers that do sell products in violation of the new limits could face civil and/or criminal penalties.”

A particularly, promising statement for the handmade clothing sector was reported in the McHenry County Business Register, a Chicago area paper, by Hyacinth Filippi Worth. As stated in the article, “Davis [CPSC Spokesperson Patty Davis] said all products intended for children 12 and younger must adhere, Davis also said hand-made, one-of-a-kind items likely will be exempt, which would allow small-time crafters and seamstresses of children’s products to continue making and selling original products.” This is a promising assertion, but unfortunately is not an official ruling at this point. I hope we can make it one.

On January 9th, a notice of proposed rule making was posted on the CPSIA web site (see Children’s Products Containing Lead: Proposed Determinations Regarding Lead Content Limits on Certain Materials or Products; Notice of Proposed Rulemaking under What’s New). This preliminary ruling will possibly exempt the following natural materials provided that “these materials have neither been treated or adulterated with the addition of materials of chemicals such as pigments, dyes, coatings, finishes or any other substance, nor undergone any processing that could result in the addition of lead into the product or material.
•precious and semiprecious gemstones
•natural or cultured pearls
•surgical steel
•precious metals: gold (at least 10 karat); sterling silver (at

least 925/1000) platinum, palladium, rhodium, osmium,
iridium & ruthenium
•natural fibers such as cotton, silk, wool, hemp, flax & linen
•other natural materials such as coral, amber, feathers, fur &
untreated leather
This is a very positive development and hopefully a definite ruling. However, it is just a start. DO YOU KNOW ANYONE WHO USES UNDYED FABRIC? Children’s apparel is about color. There needs to be more exemptions.

The CPSC has formally requested comments. The rules regarding testing are not final. Comments on testing methods (eight questions have been asked) are being accepted until January 30th and can be emailed to Sec102ComponentPartsTesting@cpsc.gov. For a discussion on these questions, the Fashion Incubator forum is a great place to familiarize oneself.

I am hopeful that component testing will be allowed along with exemptions for all components which clearly are not a lead risk as well as excluding some products altogether (such as books, handmade clothing, second hand clothing). I also hope that X-ray fluorescence ( XRF testing) is permitted as a more reasonable (read nondestructive and inexpensive) testing method.

Please help in getting this amended. Safe products are possible without the demise of small businesses in America. At this point it is imperative to keep up the momentum.

As mentioned in the article, satisfy the CPSIA’s request for comments by emailing them your thoughts on 3rd party testing methods.

The Committee on Energy and Commerce sponsored CPSIA and it is the chairman of the Committee that can call hearings on this matter. Let’s convince him to revisit this legislation by writing letters or calling (202-225-2927) to express your concern and how this law will affect you. If you’ve already written them, please write them again. Here are their names and addresses:

The Hon. Henry A. Waxman, Chairman
Committee on Energy and Commerce
2125 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

The Hon. Joe Barton, Ranking Member
Committee on Energy and Commerce
2322-A Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

The Hon. Bobby Rush, Chairman

Washington, DC 20515

The Hon. Ed Whitfield, Ranking Member
Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection
2322-A Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515

Continue CALLING and writing your congressmen and senators (Search by your zip code in the top left and right pages to find your representatives contact info.) Make sure they hear your views on this issue. Mention the REGULATORY FLEXIBILITY Act and explain that because CPSIA burdens small businesses unfairly, that CPSIA needs to be amended. Convince them to join their colleagues such as Congressman Charlie Dent, Congressman Jim Gerlach, Congressman Tim Holden, Senator Orrin Hatch, Senator Patrick Leahy, and Congressman Anthony Weiner who have taken up our cause.

The second round of voting has started at Change.org. Register if you haven’t already and make this issue one of the top 3 items presented to President-elect Obama.

Keep blogging about CPSIA and utilizing sites like facebook, twitter, and YouTube. The internet is a buzz with CPSIA. Just google it.

Join the mail-in protest, sending soon to be “hazardous goods” to CPSIA founder Rep. Rush.

Take this survey to help ascertain the economic impact of CPSIA for retail and manufacturing businesses.

And if you haven’t already . . .
Sign this petition for the Children’s Apparel Industry and this one from the Handmade Toy Alliance.

Show #101 – LIVE Feed from Quilt Market

October 25th, 2008

Boutique Cafe made some history today at Quilt Market, as we are the first media outlet to offer a live feed directly from Market! What a thrilling (and scary) experience to attempt such a technical feat on my own. We taped within the press room and invited special guests Patty Young, Paula Prass and Elizabeth Cranmer to join me. Our feed went live at 11:30 am on Ustream.tv, we thank many of you viewers for popping by to support our live show with your questions and comments. You’re the best!

We loved the Live Feed option so much that we’re going to do another one tomorrow morning (Sunday) as well. Tune in LIVE to www.ustream.tv/channel/boutique-cafe-live between 11:00am (texas time) with Myrinda of Fabric Hound and Designer Melissa Averinos.(**if you sign up for a free account on ustream, you’ll be able to post questions directly to our guests).

**GIVEAWAY: Lizzy Anne is teaming up with Boutique Cafe to offer her very popular Spring UP! Quilt pattern for a lucky viewer. Simply comment under this post to enter. We’ll draw the winner on Nov. 1st!!). Click here to view the quilt pattern that made a great splash at Market!, the pattern could be yours too!! Boutique Café Granted Exclusive Access at International Quilt Market

Boutique Café’s Daria Muirhead, who hosts one of the most popular weekly podcasts featuring designers, “mompreneurs,” and even the occasional celebrity, was the hostess with the most exclusive interviews at the Spring 2008 International Quilt Market in Portland, Oregon.

Canada (PRWEB) August 21, 2008—Boutique Café’s Daria Muirhead, who hosts one of the most popular weekly podcasts featuring designers, “mompreneurs,” and even the occasional celebrity, was the hostess with the most exclusive interviews at the Spring 2008 International Quilt Market in Portland, Oregon.

The International Quilt Market is an industry tradeshow that focuses on “the art and the business of quilting.” For vendors and buyers only, the show’s exhibitors offer everything from quilting supplies, machines, patterns and yards and yards and yards of fabric. Daria was on site as the only podcaster with permission to record the event.

The extensive and impressive list of well known and up-and-coming fabric designers interviewed by or Daria include Amy Butler, Joel Dewberry, Anna Maria Horner, Sandi Henderson, Tina Givens, Gina from Quilters Buzz, Jan Lutz of The Apron Lady Designs, Michael Miller Fabrics and the list doesn’t stop there!

While attending Quilt Market, Boutique Café was invited to attend the JCaroline Fabric 2.0 Party where Daria and other Boutique Café members had the opportunity to network and meet with designers, textile artists and media.

A select number of vidcasts from the Spring 2008 International Quilt Market show are already playing and Daria will continue to release more interviews and behind-the-scenes footage over the next couple months. The vidcasts are a perfect way for those who were not able to attend to get a feel for the show and “meet” their favorite designers. They are also a fabulous way win great giveaways (visit BoutiqueCafe.com for details).

Bob Ruggiero, Director of Publications & Public Information for Quilts, Inc., was extremely pleased with Boutique Cafe’s coverage, “I’m (so) happy to have some younger and hipper coverage!” Ruggiero has invited Daria to return to the International Quilt Market show being held this fall in Houston, Texas.
