Natural Fitness “greens your workout”
April 22nd, 2008
Though Earth Day was yesterday we should be thinking earth friendly 24/7, whether we’re riding the bus to work or flowing into downward dog. And if you often find yourself flowing into downward dog you’ll want to check out Natural Fitness and their line of high-quality, 100 percent eco-friendly yoga products.
Natural Fitness‘ products include a full line of yoga tools (mats, bags, straps, blocks and bolsters) and fitness gear (exercise and medicine balls, tubes, balance discs and mats). I received their natural rubber yoga mat, and after airing it out for a few days (that natural rubber smell packs a serious punch when lowering yourself before upward-facing dog), I was ready to try it out. I found the mat to offer good traction, though it seemed my not-so-environmentally-friendly mat was a bit better at it. I did enjoy the high-rebound dense cushion and the added thickness and length. (I didn’t have to decide whether my head or feet would hang off the mat during corpse pose.)
The nifty thing about this mat is it’s made entirely from sustainable plant-based material, is PVC free, and at the end of its life it can be composted, making them 100 percent eco-friendly. The company is pretty nifty too. One of Natural Fitness’ founding principles is to offset the impact on the environment that results from the manufacturing and distribution of their products, so the company’s created its Zero Impact Program (ZIP), which includes a variety of environmentally friendly practices such as the Plant-A-Tree initiative (for every product sold, Natural Fitness funds the planting of a tree in areas of the world that benefit most).
Natural Fitness also offsets their employees’ eco-footprint and encourages them to extend eco-conscious business practices into their personal lifestyles. And get this, even their website is eco-friendly–it’s completely powered by solar energy! Now THAT is cool! “Green your workout; green our world.” Namaste. –Emily

Good Day! I like the fact that it can be composted after use. Now, that is a unique property for a yoga block. Please enter me in your drawing. I have a yoga class every other Saturday. I would love to show the others in the class this mat. Thanks,Cindi

I bought this mat after I lost my run of the mill synthetic one. I actually thought this one offered more traction. It took a little while for me to get used to the stickiness, but I love it. Would love to have the cork block to go with it.

There are a number of eco-friendly fitness machines available. My gym features a machine called WaterRower, an indoor rowing machine actually propelled by water. It requires no electricity and is made of replenishable resources. My gym offers a class called “WaterCrew” with an instructor and about 10 WaterRower rowing machines. You can burn up to 1000 calories per session! (www.waterrower.com)

I really need to get back into yoga. My aunt is an instructor and taught me a ton of stuff several years ago when I went to visit. Gradually after the birth of my kids I stopped doing yoga. Id like to get started again.
