Natural Mat…a “good night naturally”
March 6th, 2008
If you’re looking for a “green” option when it comes to crib mattresses and bedding then you’ll want to check out the options from Natural Mat, a UK-based company started back in 2000 by parents who wanted the best, most comfortable, most natural sleeping environment for their child.
After six years, and with a little help from their children, the company has developed “the safest range of entirely natural, organic crib mattresses on the market” without the use of chemicals, plastics and PVC. So what’s in a Natural Mat organic mattress? Natural Mat uses the finest natural and organic raw materials including lambs wool, natural latex foam, coi (coconut husk coated in natural latex), mohair and cotton. These natural fibers provide higher levels or support and better ventilation than your typical synthetic foam or coil springs. Natural Mat gives you three choices: the Coco Mat (most breathable and organic); the Latex Mat (most allergy safe and supportive); and the Mohair Mat (most luxurious). I received a small cross-section of one of Natural Mat’s mattresses and I was impressed with how thick and supportive the mattress was. Before seeing it in person I doubted that something so “organic” could be that soft and yet that solid. It was amazing!
Natural Mat also offers a line of organic crib bedding including pure organic sheets and mattress protectors. The company makes all their sheets from luxurious soft flannelette and crisp cotton percale. And yes, they are machine washable and dryable. I received both a cotton and a flannel crib sheet and chose to test out the flannel and save the cotton for a giveaway.
The flannel was super soft, and I mean really, really soft, and the natural color complemented my daughter’s bedding, an added perk! It’s been washed and dried a few times and just gets softer and better with each wash. Though I had a bit of a hard time getting the sheet to completely fit over all four corners of the mattress it did hold tight and I never had an issue with it slipping off.
If you’re looking at eco-friendly ways to decorate your nursery then you’ll want to give your baby a “fresh” start with an organic mattress and sheet or two from Natural Mat. These mattresses are supposed to help baby sleep better, and that means more sleep for Mom!—Emily

The sheets sound fantastic!
I worry about the latex thing in the mattress, though. There are so many latex allergies now. Wouldn’t sleeping on it encourage a faster reaction to the product? Maybe there is a difference with natural latex and the latex in balloons, I don’t know. I would like a natural bedding option.

I am responding to your comment on behalf of Natural Mat regarding your concern on latex allergies. Latex allergy is associated ONLY with touching the actual product. The FDA highlights (please see below) that you cannot use the term hypoallergenic when it is likely that there will be human contact with natural latex. This in practical terms is related specifically to the medical industry where there is direct skin contact through latex gloves, etc. In the Natural Mat product, the latex is sandwiched between two layers of Coir, then a layer of wool, then two layers of cotton covers. Without actually cutting into the mattress there would not be any direct skin contact with the Natural Mat product, which is what all Latex allergies are related to. Additionally, Latex is a hypoallergenic material because allergens cannot grow, thrive or attach themselves in any way to Latex, which is why the product is heavily used in the medical industry.
Of the thousands of Latex Mats and hundreds of Mohair Mats Natural Mat has sold for infant use throughout England, Europe and now the U.S., we have never had one instance of any adverse allergic reaction of any level from the use of our products. We pride ourselves on providing what we, and thousands of mothers believe to be the best product we can possibly make to aid in baby’s well being.
FDA (regarding use of latex in products under FDA jurisdiction):
Labeling of medical devices containing natural rubber latex that is likely to come in contact with humans must state in bold print: “Caution: This product contains natural rubber latex which may cause allergic reactions”… Labeling of medical devices that contain natural rubber likely to come in contact with humans shall not contain the term “hypoallergenic”.
