Educate in utero

June 7th, 2007

BabyPlusWe’ve all heard that reading to your unborn child while pregnant or exposing her to the soothing sounds of classical music can have a positive effect on her I.Q., but did you know a prenatal education system exists that can strengthen her brain development with “patented, scientifically designed audio lessons?”

BabyPlusBabyPlus is a product that claims to help newborns develop better sleeping patterns (amen to that!), nurse more readily, interact and respond more, and even appear more relaxed and alert at birth. Later in life, BabyPlus children hit developmental milestones earlier and have improved school readiness and intellectual abilities. Those are some pretty big claims for a product that simply plays progressively altered variations of the maternal heartbeat. But apparently the spoken word is too difficult and music too complex for the developing child to understand, while the maternal heartbeat is just right. As your baby discriminates the simply rhythmic sounds of BabyPlus from mom’s, “learning begins and [her] brain is activiated in a way never before possible.”

BabyPlusI received the BabyPlus Prenatal Education System just over a week ago, and being in my 30th week, the schedule was to play each lesson (16 in all) for one hour twice a day for about three days. BabyPlus comes with a carrying pouch so you can just strap that baby on and go about your day. I found I couldn’t wear it while George was awake, as a 1 ½-year-old thinks the varying maternal heartbeats make for some serious dance music. But while he napped and in the evenings I would switch on the BabyPlus system, and you know, I think Petunia (a nickname by my oldest) enjoyed the sound. She’s been active in general, but when that heartbeat was going she busted her own dance moves! I actually found the sound rather soothing, so I don’t suggest wearing it while driving.

Of course I still have a few weeks to go, and then a few months after that, to discover whether or not the BabyPlus system fulfills its promises. But if you go by the great info on their website and the numerous stories from convinced BabyPlus moms, you can’t go wrong. Of course, all my children were born geniuses so it may be hard to tell whether or not the BabyPlus system truly works, but it’s definitely worth a shot! ““Emily

I study human development and I am interested in a few details. What is the difference between putting headphones on your belly with Motzart playing or a thumping drum compared to the scientifivcally researched beats that you offer with this product. $15 is a lot of money for basically a recorder so I am interested in what is so special about these sounds. I am an expectant mother at 4 months right now and i would like nother more than to give my baby early learing tools. I just want to be sure that purchasing this expensive of a product is different than something that I can produce at home.
