How to Spot a Quality Product in the Children’s Boutique World –
Submitted by Debbie Peasley bridgetandco

In searching through all the beautiful designs in the Ebay Boutique World, how can you tell if you are getting a quality product? Presentation is key to getting a buyers attention and the design itself can be phenomenal, but how does a person know if the item is of top quality. The bidding may be high, the price may be high ““ does that tell someone that the item is top quality ““ not necessarily. The seller can have 100% feedback and you still can’t be sure that the product is high quality. From a seamstress point of view, I will try to point out some of the things to look for to make sure you are getting an outfit worthy of your bid.
We all love to look at the sweet children modeling outfits, but you have to look past this. Does the outfit fit the child properly? A good seamstress will make sure that her outfit fits the model. Not all sellers use models and this does not mean that they aren’t quality outfits. Really look at the design as it is displayed. There should be pictures of the front of the outfit and the back of an outfit. The front could look fabulous, but you need to see the back as well. There doesn’t need to be an overwhelming amount of pictures to sell an outfit.
Look at the close up detail pictures of the outfit. If there are no close-ups, email the seller and request them. When looking at these pictures look for straight top stitching. If the outfit has a collar, make sure it lines up properly. I have seen outfits that button up with a collar and the collar doesn’t line up properly. Ruffles on outfits should be of consistent gathering. Side seams should line up where skirts are attached to bodices on dresses. Back seams on dresses should line up ““ zippers need to line up at the top and on the back seam. Make sure your plaids line up and if an outfit is lined, make sure the lining isn’t rolling to the outside of the garment. Look for stripes to line up properly. Seams should be properly finished to prevent fraying when washed. You can look for “serged seams” or “French seams”.
How can you tell if the fabric is quality fabric. Many designers will disclose the designer of the fabric. For example: Hannah Bella by Robyn Pandolph. Many designers use quality cotton fabrics and will disclose this in an auction. If a fabric content is not listed, you may want to contact the designer to find out the content of the fabric as well as the washing/care instructions. Not all fabrics are the same and they will not wash and wear the same. Make sure the care instructions are something you can live with. If you have a two year old toddler, a dry clean only outfit may not be the way to go. Designers use various fabrics to create designs. From vintage to shower curtains and even curtains have been recycled as a child’s outfit. All are very creative and beautiful. If in doubt, ask the designer.
